Google’s Matt Cutts loves lolcats?
“If there are important things on the web, we want to find them. But if you’re trying to push yourself up into Google first so that people can find you, you’re kind of working against the grain, you are going up hill. It is much, much easier to think about the different ways you can get known in the world and then Google will find out about you..
So this is just some brain-storming. There is a site that makes signs, like safety signs. They’ve gotten like tons of links… [snipped] Anybody here develop for the IPhone? Huge opportunity… [snipped] Have you guys seen the L-O-L Cat builder? lolcat, sorry… [snipped] these guys are getting like huge amount of links, huge amounts of page rank. So, creativity is a big theme.”
Matt Cutts [Google Engineer] at WordCamp 2007
Those are some snippets of the talk Google engineer Matt Cutts gave at wordcamp.
Shortly after, the dissenters came out of the woodwork. Posting to blogs, some people whined complained that many of the techniques Matt spoke about were a waste of time because they’re “personal content” and not related to business.
Which shows how badly some people can miss a point, because the point wasn’t to create useless stuff. The point was to create content that people actually want to pass along to others.
Matt says “creativity is a big theme.”
Al Ries says differentiate or die.
Seth Godin calls it creating purple cows.
It’s all the same concept.
Why don’t people “get” SEO?
The whole purpose of search engine optimization is to make your site more appealing to search engines. Search engines want to list popular sites first. This isn’t rocket science.
Work on making your site popular… and the search engines will like it.
