On topic trackbacks can be as good as one way incoming links and both can help.

Let's say I find an excellent post on Jimmy Bean's blog. (fictional name) So, I quote Jimmy, add something worth adding and "trackback" to his post.

He hasn't linked to me. He may down the road if he likes what I say - but my giving credit with a trackback does two things. It gives me a one way incoming link - and increases my exposure.

If trackbacks get abused, which I can totally see happening, they may become useless. But for now, if they're done right they can be very helpful.

I understand that reciprocal linking will not help a site that much.
What about trackbacks? Aren't they actually reciprocal links?
Wouldn't it be better for a business to try to get one way links instead of working with trackbacks?
On topic trackbacks will not hurt but would they actually make a lot of difference?
Thanks for any help.
